Why EFT works

Our brains work in patterns, and different parts of our brains do different things.  The thinking part of your brain is separate from the feeling part of your brain, and getting them aligned can be a challenge!

Triggers and limiting beliefs are patterns that need to shift, and they have come to be a part of us from old wounds, usually from childhood.  The key to shifting the pattern is to heal the old wound, creating new flexibility in the brain.  We are already naturally programmed to heal through crying, shaking, and vocalization.  Tapping is one way to bring about that healing.

Our core wounds are often around simple statements, like “I’m not enough” or “I’m never in control” or “People don’t like me”.  These are simple explanations we’ve created to make sense of our world, often as children.  Regardless of the truth of these statements, we repeat them to ourselves endlessly, finding “proof” of these beliefs in everyday events. Identifying your core wound and saying it out loud accesses the deep pain you’ve been living with and have come to take for granted as simply your personality or your way of being.  It gives you the opportunity to feel that wound and heal.

At the same time, the mental gymnastics of speaking and tapping and shifting the tapping location keeps your thinking brain (the prefrontal cortex) engaged.  Tapping on the forehead literally increases the blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, keeping you present and in control, instead of drifting off entirely into panic or wallowing in your pain.  The structure allows you to access the emotions without losing yourself in them, getting caught in your old pattern.

This mix of engaging both the thinking brain and the feeling brain at the same time allows old hurts to heal and patterns to shift.  Whether you believe in energy meridians or not, this simple technique is worth trying to see if it can help you.[/text_block]
